Blown-in insulation in Oceanside CA - an attic sealed before it's filled

Hot upstairs or a drafty room over the garage? We seal the attic floor, then blow in insulation evenly out to the edges.

Is blown-in insulation right for my Oceanside attic?

Blown-in insulation is loose fill, either cellulose or fiberglass, blown through a hose across the floor of your attic. In Oceanside it's the usual way to slow the heat coming through the ceilings of older houses that have little or nothing up there.

Most people notice it first in the bedrooms over the garage or in a power bill that climbs every summer, and when I get up there it's often a few inches of tired old fill, bare spots by the hatch and open gaps around pipes and lights. The price mostly turns on how much is already up there and whether it's clean enough to build on, how many can lights and openings need attic air sealing first, and how easy the attic is to move around in. The schedule turns on whether old material has to come out first and whether the city wants a permit, and the written estimate after my visit spells out what your attic needs and what it'll cost.

What our blown-in insulation job includes

With blown-in, I count the ceiling lights and look at the eaves before anything else, because the cans and the vents decide where the insulation can go and how evenly we can spread it. Next our crew seals the openings through the attic floor around pipes, wires and the hatch, since loose fill doesn't stop air and would just sit there fighting a draft. At the eaves we set baffles, guides where the roof meets the walls, so the fill doesn't spill down and bury the vents that keep the attic breathing. Then we blow it in as even in depth as we can, all the way out to the top plate along the tops of your walls, because a big mound in the middle with thin edges is the most common mistake I see in attics.

Some attics aren't ready for fresh fill. If what's up there was soaked by an old roof leak or is full of droppings, piling more on top just buries the problem, so we start with insulation removal and clean the space out first. And if the attic is only part of why the house is uncomfortable, our home insulation work looks at the walls and the crawl space too.

What changes blown-in insulation jobs in Oceanside

The City of Oceanside issues building permits and says most construction work needs one, and it keeps a list of work that's exempt. Whether an attic insulation job on its own needs a permit isn't something I'll guess at, so when it isn't clear, we check with the city before we start. If your job does need one, we pull it as the licensed contractor and handle the inspections, so you're not the one juggling city visits.

A lot of the attics we open belong to older houses with eave vents half buried by earlier work. That matters more in California than people expect, because the state's rules say attic ventilation that falls short of the state building code has to be brought up to current code, though there are exceptions for various existing conditions, so we check the vents before we plan the fill. We're based in Oceanside and work in cities across San Diego County and south Orange County, and we run into the same buried vents on jobs in Carlsbad and Vista.

How a blown-in job goes

  1. Call or send us a message

Call (760) 283-6084 or use the form and tell us what's bugging you, like a hot upstairs or a drafty back room. We'll set up a time for me to come take a look.

  2. I go up into your attic

I count the can lights, check the eaves, take photos and go over what I found with you right there. Then you get a written estimate that says what needs sealing, whether anything has to come out and what it all costs, so the price isn't a mystery.

  3. Our installers seal and blow

If you go ahead, our installers seal the attic floor, set the baffles and blow in the fill while I check in on the job. When the job calls for a permit, we take care of that side too.

  4. We walk the attic together

When it's done I walk the finished space with you, so you can see the depth out at the edges and around the hatch. We leave the space clean before we call it finished.

What people ask about blown-in insulation

How do I get my attic ready for blown-in insulation?

Mostly you just tell me what you already know, because the attic gets checked first for live knob and tube wiring, the old wiring strung on ceramic posts, along with vermiculite insulation, bathroom fans venting into the attic and roof leaks. Any of those has to be dealt with before air sealing or fill goes on top. If you remember an old leak or critters up there, mention it when you call so I know where to look.

Is blown-in insulation safe around recessed can lights?

Only around cans with an IC rating, the rating that says a fixture can sit in insulation, because a light without it is a serious fire hazard when flammable material surrounds it. A housing with slits or holes in it isn't IC rated, and a light nobody can identify should be treated as not rated. That's why I count your cans on the first visit and we plan for each one before any fill goes in.

Who can get a building permit for insulation work in Oceanside?

Oceanside issues building permits only to California licensed contractors with the right classification, or to owner-builders. To act as your own owner-builder, you need to have owned the home for the last 12 months. If you're thinking about doing it yourself, that's the first thing to check with the city.

Does adding attic insulation in California bring in state Energy Code rules?

It can, because the California Energy Commission says adding new attic insulation may count as altering the ceiling. When the ceiling is altered, the state's attic insulation and air sealing requirements apply in vented attics, so I look at what the state would ask for while I'm planning your job.

How much does blown-in insulation cost in Oceanside?

Your figure comes in the written estimate after my visit, because the price comes from what's in your attic, not from a chart. Foam costs more because it seals air while it insulates, but for most attics sealing the gaps and topping up with loose fill is the better spend, unless your ductwork runs up there. Old fill that's soaked or dirty has to come out first and adds to the job, so I'll show you photos if I think yours does.

What is the best way to check that blown-in insulation was done right?

Ask for the details in writing when the job ends, the same things a federal weatherization checklist has installers record: the insulation type, the area covered, the installed and settled thickness, the R-value and the number of bags. Settled thickness is the depth once the fill packs down, and R-value is how well it slows heat. Every job is backed by our satisfaction guarantee.

Why Oceanside homeowners call M&K Oceanside Insulation Company for blown-in insulation

  • I come out for the estimate

I'm the one who climbs into your attic for the estimate, and our installers do the work while I check in on the job. You're talking to the person who actually saw your attic, not someone reading notes from a phone call.

  • Licensed and insured for attic work

We're licensed and insured. That matters when a crew is working around your wiring and light housings in a tight, hot attic.

  • Started in Oceanside in 2021

I spent years doing upkeep for a property management company, and so many of those calls were rooms that wouldn't stay cool that I started this business in Oceanside in 2021. Landlords and property managers call us along with homeowners, because we've been on their side of the job.

  • You see the attic first

We're known for showing owners what's really up in their attic before anyone talks about adding anything. You decide with photos in front of you, not on a sales pitch.

The part of this job that counts most is the checking and sealing nobody sees once the fill is down, so if your upstairs runs hot, send us a message or call (760) 283-6084 to set up a visit.

  • Insulation removal

When the old fill is wet, moldy or full of droppings, clearing it out gives the new insulation a clean, dry floor to sit on.

  • Home insulation

If cold floors or warm walls are part of the problem, we look at the whole house and not just the space over the ceiling.

Count your can lights and give us a call

If you have the home's age, a way into the attic and a rough count of ceiling can lights when you call, we can plan the visit around what matters most in your attic.
